Tension mounts as the lads get ready for the May Day offensive but back at Chateau Falconcrest the Grandees are pulling out all the stops to get the LUNITY vote out in the national and group elections. The Grandees still calculate that 4TM will only get four to six seats on the NEC and the "Independent Left" just one (RED BACON) if the Big Tent can get the vote out. 4TM has churned out a number of leaflets but they've failed to win over any prominent supporter of the PCS Democrats or the rump of the Moderati - who it should not be forgotten will still bag several thousand votes simply on the strength of their name. The only chance of a 4TM breakthrough - a swing that would give them 10 to 12 on the NEC - would be a major split in the left vote. But the "Independent Left" aka Socialist Caucus bandwagon is still stuck in first gear. They've failed to sway what's left of the SWP in PCS which is doggedly remaining in the Big Tent and their only hope is to make a bigger splash in DWP despite the handicap of being led by LEE ROCK and CHARLIE McDONALD. The Grandees, however, are taking no chances and this was apparent at the April DWP Group Equality Committee meeting at the PCS Leeds office which is the hub of the LUNITY election machine. At the start of meeting GEC member CHRIS CUTHBERT announced that NEC member (and top Grandee) JOHN MCINALLY was in the building and was to give 'a state of the nation address'. BIG MAC arrived and proceeded to tell the meeting how great the LU leadership was performing. When ROB BRYSON, the Socialist Wanker defector who's joined 4TM, dared to challenge this view BIG MAC responded with the usual anti-4TM jibes which was then repeated by all the other speakers though Rob's former SWP comrade, STEVE WEST, backed him up on the question of the shambolic end to the DWP Jobs, Rights & Services Campaign. BIG MAC didn't like that but what really incensed him and brought things to a head was when ROB spoke about how nothing had come of Jan 31 st and we weren't even in negotiations. Incredibly he responded by ranting -- "well Rob its because of your lot, 4TM, that we are not in negotiations, the government is waiting for you to win the elections so it can accelerate the attacks". BIG MAC is usually quite formidable in debate but this time he was pretty rattled though he was still prepared to speak to BRYSON socially after the meeting ended unlike DWP Chair and JANICE run-around ,JANE ATCHINSON, who pointedly ignored the gay icon throughout the day. Some interesting election facts: John Jamieson only managed to get 69 nominations for the NEC, about half the total of his fellow Democracy Alliancers. The Sheridan effect, perhaps? The standard amount of nominations for the Democracy Alliance list seems to be 117-119, with a few below that (Rob Williams, Dave Richards) and a few adding ten or more to that number (Lloyd, Conway, McFadden, Reid & Wesley). IL have 14 branches (all in DWP), with their people picking up other nominations from their local work by the looks of things, as well as the 3 branches that have nominated IL candidates and non-PCSD Democracy Alliance candidates. In a development that will scare LU in HMRC, IL have picked up nominations from an HMRC branch in North London. This branch's only other nomination was for Hector Wesley. In total about 180 branches have made nominations, which isn't very much as an overall % of branches. _____________________________________________________ Glad to see that the PCS "yoof" have got their priorities right. Yes, the knives are out within the Young Members section over the arbitrary way that TRACY EDWARDS has chosen to staff the YM stall at Brighton conference. TRACY, who is YM organiser, has decided to appoint three of her cronies rather than seek nominations for a vote. MARK CHISMAN, another nonentity, has formally complained and he's threatening to move a constitutional change to ensure it doesn't occur again. For those of you who wish they were under 27 again, here's a sample YM meeting agenda: 1. CHAIRS OPENING JOKE ______________________________________________________
